संस्कृतं नाम दैवी वाक् (1) - An interesting study of the word जगत्

Brooding on this word जगत्, came to mind a letter-by-letter interpretation, which  became really a revelation. 

Revelation ? Yes !

Let me first put down the meaning of जगत्  from Apte’s dictionary - 

जगत् a. (-ती f.) 1 Moving, movable; सूर्य आत्मा जगत- स्तस्थुषश्च Rv.1.115.1; इदं विश्वं जगत्सर्वमजगच्चापि यद्भवेत् Mb. -m. Wind, air. -n. The world, the universe; जगतः पितरौ वन्दे पार्वतीपरमेश्वरो R.1.1. -2 'The world of the soul', body; Māl.5.2. -3 A multitude of animals. ...... स्याज्जगद्विष्टपे पुमान् । इङ्गे वायौ ना जङ्गमे मृगषण्डेऽप्ययं त्रिषु । (Ref. नानार्थमञ्जिरी of राघवः)

Now let me put forth my letter by letter study -  

• ज a. [जि-जन्-जु-वा ड] (At the end of comp.) 1 Born from or in, produced or caused by, descended from, growing in, living or being at or in &c.; अत्रिनेत्रज, कुलज, जलज, क्षत्रियज, अण्डज, उद्भिज &c. -2 Prepared from, made of. -3 Belonging to, connected with, peculiar to.

• ग a. (Used only at the end of comp.) Who or what goes, going, moving, being, staying, remaining

• त् - In Sanskrit grammar there is a सूत्रम् - तपरस्तत्कालस्य (1-1-70) by which a two letter word say अत् having a vowel such as अ followed by त्, means अ only or ‘अ that’s all’. So, त् stands for ‘that's all’

As can be seen, 

• ज stands for what is born

• ग stands for what goes

• त् stands for “that’s all”

So, जगत् = “is born ⇒ goes ⇒ that’s all” !

Is it not interesting that every letter in this word has a meaning of its own and yet the three letters merge together to become one word, which brings philosophical completeness to the meanings of every letter as put together, also in the right sequence !

If one deliberates, it is not difficult to appreciate that nothing in this world is permanent. So why to have attachments with things, which are fleecy ? Hence जगन्मिथ्या ! 

Spiritual pursuit अध्यात्म is really seeking knowledge of what is permanent, what is eternally valid and true. 

I can’t imagine that any highest level of human intelligence would have prompted one to compose and decide that let the word for ‘world, universe’ be जगत् ! 

I am inclined to believe that this word जगत्,  is there in संस्कृत language, only by divine grace.

संस्कृतं नाम दैवी वाक् |  अन्वाख्याता महर्षिभिः || 

संस्कृतं is truly a divine language, adopted and propagated further by the great sages !

People seem to be worried about what will happen of संस्कृत language, if no one makes an effort to revive it. 

Revive संस्कृत a divine language by human effort ? 

The language has stayed for eons. Whether it should continue to stay will never depend upon there being adequate human effort or not. 

संस्कृतम् is truly a divine language only. I would simply like to take sips from this torrent of a perennial, divine flow ! 

I am happy to share this small little revelation that dawned on me when analyzing words, word-elements, even letter by letter. 

मा शुचः (गीता १८-६६) Let there be no doubt that संस्कृतम् will stay, because it is Divine language and every noble thought therein is eternal, universal, imperishable !
